the story
nine lives started about 4 years ago, in my drawing 1 class of freshman year in high school. it all began when i started looking at furry art, and i became inspired to
create my own furry characters. the first of which was booyaka, which i'm sure you all are familiar with by now. after her, i began creating even more
characters, until i decided i should do something with them. (which happens with all the characters i create...) so i started drawing a comic. it was a bit
of an improv comic at first, and it was called fuzz. older fans will remember this.
fuzz was a comic i did to pass the time, mostly. the pages were really sloppy, and i never took up the entire sheet... just the top half. everything was
messy and hastily put together, and there wasn't much of a story either. the dialogue was also horrible. i know a lot of people liked fuzz, but i didn't after
a while. so i decided to give it a bit of a makeover, and fuzz became nine lives.
the inspiration for the title came from a song, actually. nine lives by south. every time it came on, it reminded me of booyaka... since she's a cat... and i realized that i could
change the title to that and have nine characters and so on... so i made up a few more things, gave the story an actual story, and decided that i would put
some real work into this comic. i've never really done a comic where each page actually looks like a comic page, and some might even say it looks professional
this way... so i'm really proud of what i've done.
the story is basically just a focus on the lives of these nine characters. there is a plot, but it's a thin one i guess... i'm just trying to make their
lives seem as close to real life as possible. i don't want it to be crazy and unbelievable, so i guess you could call it a drama... even though i wouldn't
call it that.
nine lives is like my baby. i don't know what i would do without it. i love all of the characters and their stories, and even though it's the cause of a lot
of my stress sometimes, i'm never going to abandon it.
the artist
my name is nikki stavin, i'm 19 and i live in the chicagoland area in illinois. i attended the school of the art institute for one year but right now i don't really know what i'm doing. i'm not going back
to that school mostly for financial reasons. i will probably continue my studies at columbia college in chicago.
art is very important to me as it's the only thing i'm really good at. i love comics, even if it seems like i
don't do them very fast. i put a lot of work into each page whether it shows or not. drawing is my main forte, but i also have talent in photography, painting, soft
sculpture and installations.
